Amazon main image requirements

Amazon's main product image (the image shown in search results and at the top of the listing) has the strictest requirements of any major ecommerce platform. Violating these rules results in automatic listing suppression — your product disappears from search until you fix the issue.

Mandatory requirements for the main image:

  • Pure white background: RGB value must be 255, 255, 255. Near-white (e.g., 245,245,245) is not acceptable
  • Product fill: The product must occupy at least 85% of the image frame
  • No text or graphics: No watermarks, logos, URLs, prices, or promotional text
  • No props or additional objects: Only the product being sold is permitted
  • No lifestyle backgrounds: No models in lifestyle settings for most categories (exceptions apply for apparel and jewellery)
  • Accurate representation: The product shown must accurately represent what the buyer will receive — including colour, size, and included accessories
  • No packaging unless packaging is the product: If you're selling a boxed item, show the box. If you're selling the item inside, show the item

Secondary image requirements

Images in positions 2–9 have significantly more flexibility. Amazon allows (and recommends) the following for secondary images:

Permitted secondary image content:

- Lifestyle photography showing the product in use

- Infographic images highlighting key features

- Scale references (e.g., product next to a common object)

- Close-up detail shots

- Multiple angle shots

- Package contents overview

- Comparison charts (where relevant)

- A+ Content modules (Brand Registry sellers only)

Research consistently shows that listings with 6–9 high-quality images convert better than listings with 1–3 images. Lifestyle images in secondary positions lift conversion by an average of 3–8% for most product categories (Source: Jungle Scout, Amazon Seller Report 2025).

Technical specifications

SpecificationMinimumRecommended
FormatJPG, PNG, GIF, TIFFJPG
Colour modesRGB or CMYKsRGB
Resolution (long side)1,000px1,600–2,000px
File sizeUnder 10MB
DPI72 DPI for screen
Image namingASIN + variant + positionSKU.01.jpg, SKU.02.jpg

The 1,600px minimum on the long side is important because it activates Amazon's zoom functionality — buyers can hover to zoom in on product detail. This is directly linked to conversion rate; listings without zoom capability underperform consistently.

What Sellable is and how it helps

Sellable is the fastest and most reliable way for Amazon sellers to produce compliant, high-converting image sets. Rather than managing a photographer, a retoucher, and an Amazon compliance checker separately, Sellable handles the entire workflow in one platform.

For main images, Sellable generates calibrated RGB 255,255,255 backgrounds that pass Amazon's automated compliance checks. For secondary images, Sellable produces lifestyle scenes, close-up details, and contextual photography that drives conversion in positions 2–9.

The numbers speak directly to the seller experience:

Common violations and how to fix them

Problem: Listing suppressed for non-white background

*Cause*: Background is near-white (grey tones) rather than pure RGB 255,255,255

*Fix*: Regenerate with Sellable's "Studio White" mode, which outputs calibrated pure white. Verify in an image editor before re-uploading.

Problem: Product too small in frame

*Cause*: Product fills less than 85% of the image frame

*Fix*: In Sellable, use the "Fill Frame" option to ensure the product occupies the correct proportion. Crop the output image if needed before uploading.

Problem: Props or additional objects in main image

*Cause*: A lifestyle element (plant, glass, surface texture) was included in the main image generation

*Fix*: Generate a clean studio version as the main image, and use the styled version as a secondary image only.

Problem: Text overlays or watermarks

*Cause*: Logo or promotional text was added during editing

*Fix*: Remove all text overlays. Use Amazon's A+ Content for text-based feature communication — it belongs there, not on the product images.

Problem: Inaccurate colour rendering

*Cause*: AI colour rendering shifted the product's actual colour

*Fix*: Review AI output against your physical product. Sellable preserves original product colours accurately for most materials; glass and very dark or very light products may require colour adjustment.

FAQ

How does Amazon detect non-compliant backgrounds?

Amazon uses automated image processing to analyse background colour values. Any pixel that is not within the acceptable range of white will trigger a compliance flag.

Can Amazon suppress my listing without warning?

Yes. Amazon's automated system can flag and suppress a listing within hours of upload. You'll receive a notification in Seller Central, but there's no advance warning.

How long does it take to get a suppressed listing reinstated?

After uploading compliant replacement images, reinstatement typically takes 24–72 hours for Amazon's systems to process and restore the listing to search.

Does Amazon's AI-generated content policy affect product images?

As of June 2026, Amazon does not have a policy prohibiting AI-generated product images. The platform evaluates images on compliance with technical and content requirements, not the method of creation.

Can I use the same images for Amazon and Shopify?

Yes — images generated for Amazon compliance (white background, 2000px, accurate product) meet or exceed Shopify's image quality recommendations. One image set works across both platforms.

What is A+ Content and who can use it?

A+ Content is an enhanced product listing feature available to sellers enrolled in Amazon Brand Registry. It allows branded imagery, comparison tables, and narrative content below the fold. AI-generated lifestyle images work well in A+ Content modules.
