Product Photo Checklist for Ecommerce Stores (2026)

Source photo checklist

Before uploading to any AI tool or marketplace, verify your source photo:

  • [ ] Product is the clear focal point — no competing objects in frame
  • [ ] Background is solid (white, grey, or any single colour)
  • [ ] Lighting is even — no harsh shadows on the product face
  • [ ] Product colour looks accurate on screen
  • [ ] Image is in focus — especially at the product's most important detail
  • [ ] Resolution is at least 2MP (any modern smartphone achieves this)
  • [ ] Product fills 70%+ of the frame (crops better, generates better)
  • [ ] Multiple angles captured (front, side, detail) if the product warrants it

Amazon image checklist

Main image (position 1) — before uploading to Seller Central:

  • [ ] Background is pure white: RGB 255, 255, 255
  • [ ] Product fills at least 85% of the image frame
  • [ ] No text, watermarks, or logos in the image
  • [ ] No additional objects, props, or lifestyle elements
  • [ ] Product accurately represents what the buyer will receive
  • [ ] Minimum 1,000px on the longest side (2,000px recommended)
  • [ ] File format is JPG or PNG
  • [ ] File size is under 10MB

Secondary images (positions 2–9):

  • [ ] At least 5 secondary images uploaded (listings with 6+ images convert better)
  • [ ] Position 2: lifestyle image showing product in use
  • [ ] Position 3: infographic with key features/benefits
  • [ ] At least one scale reference showing product size context
  • [ ] At least one detail/close-up shot
  • [ ] No claims that violate Amazon's advertising policies

Technical verification:

- [ ] Opened in image editor and sampled background colour (main image) — reads 255,255,255

- [ ] Verified product fills 85%+ by visually reviewing at full resolution

- [ ] All images are minimum 1,000px × 1,000px

Shopify image checklist

Before uploading to Shopify Admin:

  • [ ] Resolution is 2048×2048px or larger
  • [ ] Aspect ratio is consistent across all product images (1:1 recommended)
  • [ ] File size is under 20MB per image
  • [ ] Format is JPG (photos) or PNG (graphics/transparent)
  • [ ] Colour space is sRGB
  • [ ] 5–8 images per product (studio + lifestyle + detail)
  • [ ] Main image (position 1) is legible at 200×200px thumbnail size
  • [ ] Alt text added to each image in Shopify Admin
  • [ ] Compressed to 500KB–2MB for fast page load

Collection page considerations:

- [ ] Main image has consistent background colour across all products in the collection

- [ ] Product is visible and identifiable at collection thumbnail size

- [ ] No text overlays on main images (hard to read at small sizes)
