ShipBob and ShipStation are frequently searched together, but they solve fundamentally different problems. Confusing them is one of the most common mistakes early ecommerce sellers make when evaluating logistics tools.
ShipBob is a 3PL (third-party logistics provider). You send your inventory to ShipBob's warehouses across the US, UK, EU, Canada, and Australia. When a customer places an order, ShipBob's warehouse staff picks, packs, and ships it on your behalf. You never touch the package.
ShipStation is shipping management software. It connects your Shopify, Amazon, Etsy, and WooCommerce stores to shipping carriers (USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL). You still pack the boxes yourself; ShipStation helps you buy labels at discounted rates, print them efficiently, and track shipments.
ShipBob has fulfilment centres across major metro areas in the US, allowing 2-day delivery reach to a large percentage of the US population — competitive with Amazon Prime for DTC brands. Their WRO (Wholesale Replenishment Orders) feature also handles FBA replenishment shipments.
ShipStation's primary value is discounted carrier rates (often 40–86% off retail USPS rates) and multi-store/multi-carrier management from one dashboard. It doesn't handle the physical fulfilment — that's still your job.

| Starting cost | ~$5–9 per order fulfilled | $9.99/month (50 shipments) |

| Minimum volume | 400+ orders/month recommended | No minimum |
ShipBob's per-order costs include pick, pack, and shipping labour — but not carrier shipping costs, which are charged at actual rates. For a standard DTC order, total cost including shipping is typically $8–15 per order depending on destination and carrier.
Use ShipBob if:
- You're doing 400+ orders/month and fulfilment is consuming your time
- You want to offer 2-day shipping without owning a warehouse
- You're selling DTC alongside Amazon and want distributed inventory
- You're a solo operator or small team who can't staff a warehouse
Use ShipStation if:
- You ship from your own space and just need rate shopping + label printing
- You're below 400 orders/month and per-order 3PL costs aren't justified
- You sell on multiple channels and want one shipping dashboard
- You use a different 3PL but want ShipStation's carrier rate discounts
These are complementary tools, not competing ones. Many ShipBob customers also use ShipStation — ShipBob for their primary DTC fulfilment, ShipStation for orders they handle themselves (wholesale, special orders, samples).
If you're shipping from your home or office and need better carrier rates and multi-channel order management: ShipStation.
If you want to stop touching packages entirely and scale without hiring warehouse staff: ShipBob (or evaluate ShipBob alongside competitors Flexport, Deliverr/Shopify Fulfillment Network, and Red Stag).
